Does anyone know the background to the phrase "That's greek to me!" I ask
because I know a joke that uses that phrase, and typically people over 35
years old laugh, whereas younger people don't.

Thanks,
Bruce H.

Although it's usually attributed to William Shakespeare, in "Julius
Caesar", actually, the phrase is older than that. It comes from a Medieval
Latin proverb "Graecum est; non potest legi" (It is Greek; it cannot be
read). Both the Latin and the English meant then just what the phrase does
now, to refer to something that is unintelligible.
